Purpose of the mandate
- Give greater visibility to the situation of people living in extreme poverty.
- Highlight the human rights consequences of the systematic neglect they face.
- Examine initiatives to promote and protect their rights and make recommendations.
Origin and continuity
The Commission on Human Rights established the mandate in 1998. The Human Rights Council, which succeeded the Commission in 2006, maintained and developed it through successive resolutions.
